COLLABORATORS: National Environmental Education Foundation, Lichens CitiSci, USDA USFS National Air Resource Management Program, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Sunny Wolf Charter School

LOCATION: Oregon, USA

DATE RANGE: 2021-2023, ongoing efforts

THE WHAT: What Is In Your Air? encompassed 30 weeks of in-class activities, fieldwork, and outdoor school activities for 5th and 6th graders. Weeks were divided into three phases, aimed to incorporate a variety of learning activities to encourage students to engage with air quality content on many levels.

PHASE ONE
General focus on what air quality is and why it is important

PHASE TWO
Connect air quality topics to things they are familiar with (wildfires, birding, scientific concepts, cars) and created career connections

PHASE THREE
Data-based activities (graphing their purple air data, working with state air data) and the importance of visual aids, incorporating the Tribal perspective, fieldwork capstone, and empowerment exercises

IMPACT: Enhancing students' understanding about the impacts of air quality on human health, ecological health, and climate change, and to empower them to take action on protecting the air.
