AIR QUALITY SCIENCE COMMUNICATIONS TO SHARE KNOWLEDGE AND EMPOWER NON-EXPERTS

PROJECT DETAILS
NAME: Air Quality Activities -- Learning Logs + Fieldwork Activities

COLLABORATORS: Lichens CitiSci, USDA USFS National Air Resource Management Program, Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Sunny Wolf Charter School, OR

LOCATION: USA

DATE RANGE: 2023 - 2024

THE WHAT: Air Quality Activities are a series of off the shelf products designed across many partners for non-experts to engage with air quality content through a variety of activities. There are the Learning Logs which do not require facilitation and there are the Fieldwork activities which do require facilitation.

IMPACT: Through hands-on collaboration with agencies, non-profit partners, and youth audiences, this work is designed for and by this collaborative group to support hands-on learning. Air quality is important to all of us but can be tricky to grasp. We hope these activities help engage and empower non-experts in air quality topics.

LEARNING LOGS
These activities were a collaboration across Vanessa Carsey, Alexandreana Cocroft, Karen Dillman, and Hanna Mesraty.

What is in your air?
This worksheet explores basics into what air quality is and why it matters.

Air Quality + Wildlife
This worksheet connects the dots between air quality and impacts to wildlife and plants.

FIELDWORK ACTIVITIES
These activities were a collaboration across Charlie Pavlisich, Hillary Sales, Morgan Schafer, Shawn Hardy, Amanda Hardman, Karen Dillman, and Hanna Mesraty.

Fieldwork Activities
This booklet contains two separate activities, both require facilitation and some basic tools. There is a Lichen Community Survey section with a briefing into concepts of abundance and health within lichen communities, and the vital role they play within micro and macro ecosystems. And there is a Naturalist Observation section which is an opportunity to pause, observe, and reflect on what is happening in nature around you.
